If you could be anybody you wanted to be who would you choose?

Did you ever play this game? It can be a fun way to stretch your imagination, or to get to know someone else a little better. During Easter, if I were to be given the opportunity to pick someone else I wanted to be, it would be Cleopas. “Who,” you may ask? Cleopas is one of the two believers that Jesus appeared to on the road to Emmaus. I have always marveled that on his resurrection day, Jesus took the time to make himself known these two travelers on the road to Emmaus.

In answer to Jesus’ question about what they had been discussing, we learn that these believers were part of the group of disciples surrounding Jesus and that they were well versed in the story of the crucifixion as well as the happenings of this first Easter day. But Jesus called them out, because they had not yet made the leap of faith and believed all that the prophets had spoken!

Then, “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, Jesus explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24: 27) Wow, can you even imagine being part of that tutorial? Jesus himself, pointing out how all the Scriptures and Prophets were connected and how they all pointed to him?

If that were not enough, they then got to have a meal with the Risen Christ, and in the very act of Jesus breaking bread for them, their eyes were opened; they recognized him! They then give us some insight into the tutorial they had heard that afternoon on the road, “our hearts were burning within us while he talked,” they said. Can you even fathom, Jesus, fresh from his resurrection, is putting together all of the pieces of His story…and opening their eyes to understanding.

This Easter, let us not be “slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.” I believe that if you will take the step of putting your faith in the resurrected Jesus; your heart will burn with understanding.
